There is a kind of quiet that unnerves you. When you ask a question out loud and demand a response but none seems to be forthcoming, or when you require an assistance but the other end seems to be just dead. That silence, that kind of quiet fazes you, makes you anxious and possibly perturbed. Or perhaps, you ask yourself, “what  next?”, “what do I do now” or “where do I go from here. And you look to the universe to give a sign…just anything to assure you that you’re not lost, that you’re not without purpose, but it seems like the universe and all its resources turns it back to you, and there is no response.

You’re a religious person, say, and you turn to God for guidance, for the next step, for help while experiencing turbulence in your life. But above the roaring of the thunder and the tossing to and fro…amidst all the chaos, there is a distinct response you hear- an utter silence, a deafening silence. Sometimes, and probably most times, you tend to throw in the towel, and just call it fate, telling yourself “what will be will be” and if this isn’t happening, then it’s not meant to be. While rarely, some just hold on in the face of pain, hold on to the last shred of hope, keep their eyes on the horizon and wait…

…they wait for the light of the sun, no matter how little it may seem, even as dark as the skies may be now, they just wait, hoping to God that the calm they seek comes. They wait for as long as it takes with one ingredient keeping them together, helping them hold on and brave the storm- they wait while holding on to hope. And hope, as long as they hold on to it, keeps saying, “Hold On, Pain Ends”, it tells them that everything will be alright, when everything around is crashing…

But at the end, you ask anyone who’d gone through a waiting period… You say it’s a waste of time, but they’ll tell you, what you see as a waste of time is actually the time of hope, the time it takes hope to fetch your calm from the silence you got. They’ll tell you how, when it seems like there is no way, but hope says keep holding on…and in the end they always get one thing they’ve wanted all along; the calm.

Storm comes, you call for shelter, but all you get is silence… you wait and hold on to hope…and in the end, the silence brings a calm. Sometimes, all you need is silence to get the calm you need. Sometimes, all it takes is silence to force you to listen to the direction to the shelter. Sometimes, all you have to do is wait for that silence to lead you home.
